SUDLEY CHURCH CEMETERY BY-LAWS

SUDLEY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

  1. The price of gravesites will be $1,000.00. Gravesites are available only for members of Sudley Church. Ownership of a gravesite only allows burial privileges.
  2. A fee of $50.00 will be paid from the Cemetery Fund to the Cemetery Manager for services rendered from each burial.
  3. Funeral Directors will be responsible for the digging of graves and the moving of surplus earth to the west side of the Cemetery.
  4. Vaults must be used for all graves. No double-deep graves and only three cremations per gravesite.
  5. All live flowers shall be removed from graves within ten (10) days. Glass containers are not to be used at any time in Sudley Cemetery.
  6. Planting, fences, or any kind of ornamentation are not permitted and will be discarded if used on gravesites.
  7. Artificial flowers are permitted only from November 1 through April 15.
  8. Burials and openings of graves are discouraged on Sunday at Sudley Church Cemetery. Upon special request to the Cemetery Committee, burials or openings of graves may be scheduled after 2:00 P.M. on sunday.
  9. Tombstones and lot markers will be set flush with the ground. This may be waived in the old Cemetery upon requiest.
  10. A register shall be made of all lot owners or nearest kin, bringing their addrees up to date.
  11. A copy of these bylaws and any other actions taken by the Cemetery Committee shall be mailed to lot owners.
  12. A copy of these bylaws shall be sent to all local Funeral Directors and a copy handed to the family of the deceased.
  13. There shall be a committee of no less than four to carry out the By-Laws and to handle all business including all he finances of the Cemetery. This committee shall be elected by the Conference of Sudley United Methodist Church for a term of three years and may succeed theselves if re-elected. This committee is accountable to the Trustees of Sudley United Methodist Church.
  14. Cemetery books are to be audited every year.
  15. The Cemetery Committee meets the first month of each year and when necessary thereafter. The Cemetery Committee decides on the Chairman within the committee.
  16. Grave sites unwanted by individuals must be returned to Sudley Cemetery and not sold by individual site owners.
  17. Gravesite owners are responsible for cleaning of their Cemetery Tombstones.

History

  • 1822 – ¾ acre deeded to the Trustees for a “House of Worship” by Landon Carter of “Woodland”.
  • 1871-73 New church built after the Civil War. 1896 – Two acres and two poles deeded to Trustees by Rev. & Mrs. Henry C. Cushing for a cemetery.
  • 1922-23 – Third church built after the fire of 1918.
  • 1935 – 1.25 acres added (Sam Moss purchase)
  • 1986 – One acre added (gift of Paul Allison)
  • 1987 – gift of Featherbed hillside. ( Lovelace family)
  • 1992 – Church expansion. Education wing & renovation of 1923 Fellowship Hall.
  • Stone wall gift of Marion Wheeler, and repair a gift of the Lunceford family.
